Dr. Gordon Marshall Ward 1942

It chanced that on that day she fell asleep

The slender chord that held her in this vale

Was broken, and her spirit sped to keep

The rendez-vous with God which none can fail.

Her life was rich in all the nobler things.

Throughout a span of more than fourscore years

She knew the peace that Christian living brings,

That trust in God which banishes all fears.

A strong and simple faith was all her creed,

A faith that blossomed in a living joy;

And on her countenance for all to read,

A peace which even death could not destroy.

The circle of her friends was wide, and yet

The childrens' welfare was her foremost care;

She knew them all, and each was sure to get

Of loving help a large and generous share.

She lived through pioneer days of rugged toil

 In old French Canada, and so at last

'Twas fitting that they laid her in that soil

 Which nurtured her existence in the past -

Its rivers, woods and lakes are wild and free,

A bounteous nature flaunts its beauty there;

She loved that beauty of God's world to see,

And now she rests there, free from worldly care.

A gracious kindness tempered all her ways,

A passionate devotion to the right,

And those who knew her claimed that all her days

She was an inspiration clear and bright.

And as the perfume of a living flower

Fills all the atmosphere with fragrance sweet

So shall her memory live from this hour

To make the lives of others more complete.

What word that in the future may be read

Describes her life in one short phrase and. clear?

No finer epitaph can now be said -

''This world was better for her presence here''.
