April 26, Born in Brampton, Ontario

1914Family moved to Toronto, 23 Barton Avenue. My father was the
Assistant Minister at Walmer Road Baptist Church. Margaret Winnif'red
born June 9.
 
1915
Family spent a holiday at Plunkett, Sask. on my Uncle Jimmie
Scott's farm. My father preached in Saskatoon.
 
1917
Started to Kindergarten at Palmerston Avenue School. Family
summered at Greenhurst, Sturgeon Lake for four summers.
 
1919
Family moved to 11 Kendall Avenue in Toronto. Attended Huron
Street Public School. John Scott born March 30­
 
1920
Family moved to Saskatoon, Sask. 817 7th Avenue. My father was the Minister of First Baptist Church. Became involved in church work - Sunday School, Junior Choir, Mission Band, B.Y.P.U. Attended school at Wilson School and King Edward Public School.
 
1922
 Started taking piano lessons - Mrs McKinnon and Charles Peaker.
 
1924
Baptized by my father and joined the Church.

1925
Started taking organ lessons from Mr Vaughan. Graduated from Public School, wrote for honours but missed. Attended Nutana Collegiate, Co-Editor of the School paper, The Hermes, participated in the Bryant Oratory Contest. Didn't win although
my father thought I did. Did not participate in any sports  because I lived too far from the school. Kept healthy by much walking and skating in the winter.
 
1926
Attended Trail Rangers group at the Church, constructed two
crystal set radios - leader Tilman Titus. Played the organ for  part of a church service for the first time.
 
1928
Graduated from High School after three years with Junior Matriculation. Started in to University of Saskatchewan, Chemistry, Professor Basterfield. Ceased taking organ lessons. Worked at Bowman Bros. Automotive Accessory Warehouse for five
summers. This paid my way through University and paid for my clothes.

1929
Started dating and corresponding with Margaret Aitchison in Vancouver. She had formerly lived in Saskatoon and attended the church and Sunday School and Junior Choir. My first romance! She visited her grandmother in Saskatoon each summer.
 
1932
Graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with B.Sc. degree. My father was losing his sight and went frequently to Mayo Bros. Clinic in Rochester, Min. I left home and proceeded to Hamilton by way of Rochester where I stayed for a week with the family.
In Hamilton I attended McMaster University, boarded with Rev. and Mrs H.F.Veals and visited often with relatives in the east end of the city. I corresponded regularly with Margaret A.
 
1933
Graduated from McMaster University with M.A. degree under Dr Charles Burke. Went to Ottawa to take a job with the Tobacco Division, Central Experimental Farm! Department of Agriculture. The work was in Plant Chemistry under Dr N.T.Nelson, Chief,at a salary of 40cents/hr less 10% for a 10-hour day - about $60.00/month.
Stayed first briefly with Jack and Marie McLennan and Billie. Roomed with Mr and Mrs Lewis on Lakeside Avenue for $5.00/month, meals at Mrs Larkin,s on Bronson Avenue for $20.00/month. Started taking organ lessons again with Dr Frank Harrison at Knox
Presbyterian Church. At Christmas time I went home to Saskatoon by train - $35.00 return. Corresponded regularly with Margaret A.

1934
Went to board with Mr and Mrs Leslie Cummings, 12 Broadway Ave. Joined Fourth Avenue Baptist Church, Rev. Harry Mollins, Minister. Met Mr and Mrs Helmer and Aribert. Continued taking organ lessons from Kenneth Meek, first at the Christian Science Church then at Stewartan United. Went home at Christmastime to
Saskatoon then on to Vancouver for New Year. Took a diamond ring and asked Margaret to marry me. She said Not yet. Her father tried to get me a job in Vancouver. We continued corresponding regularly with the occasional phone call.
 
1935
At Christmas I sent Margaret a diamond ring and we became formally engaged. I was seeing Birdie Helmer and playing accompaniments for her singing but was not dating her. Engagement to Margaret broken in June. Still taking organ lessons. Became active in
B.Y.P.U. at Fourth Avenue and teaching Sunday School. Met Ed Checkland and we became good friends. Together we produced a monthly small literary magazine for the Young People for about a year. Sometimes went skating on the Rideau Canal or Dows Lake. Win married Harold Stibbards.
 
1936
Moved from the old Chemistry Building to the new William Saunders Building. Designed my own laboratory there. Started dating Birdie and became part of the large MacLennan family. Supplied occasionally on the organ at Highland Road Baptist Church and for one season at the Ottawa East Baptist Church (Fellowship). Joined the local
branch of the C.C.O.(Canadian College of Organists). Took organ and theory exams of the McGill Conservatory of Music under Kenneth Meek. High honours.
 
1937
Birdie went to Toronto with her mother to study singing under Mrs
Park at the Toronto Conservatory of Music. I bought my first car
a 1927 Cadillac coupe for $200.00. Went to Toronto to take a
music exam in organ and theory to become an Associate of the C.C.O.
Failedl Too little experience. Still active in B.Y.P.U. at
Fourth Avenue. Was invited to become a member of the Young
People's Council of the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec.
Periodic trips to Toronto for executive meetings for one year.
Left the Cummings' home on Broadway and went to board with Mrs ?
on Fourth Avenue near the church. Became engaged to Birdie Helmer.
 
1938
Bought another car, a 1933 Chev. Birdie returned to Ottawa.
My first scientific publication at the Tobacco Division.
 Publication was not being encouraged at that time.
 
1938
Obtained permission from the Department of Agriculture for a
"transfer of work" to the University of Toronto towards a Ph.D.
degree in Plant Physiology, research project to be approved by
the Department. Married to Aribert Helmer Sept. 3 in Fourth Avenue
Church by my father. Kenneth Meek played the organ. Ten-day
honeymoon in New England as far as Boston. Returned to Ottawa for
one day, packed everything in the car, drove to Toronto, settled
in a one-room apartment with Murphy bed on Spadina Avenue.
Attended Walmer Road with Mother and Dad. Birdie sang in the
choir, continuing her singing lessons at the Conservatory. I spent
every day at the Botany Building on campus. Drove to St Gabriel de
Brandon, P.Q. for Christmas with the Helmers. Got snowed in and
had to leave the car there till spring. Returned to Toronto by train.
Played the Walmer Road organ twice - a small wedding and a Toronto
Sunday School Childrens' Christmas Rally.
 
1939 
Returned to Ottawa. Leave of absence not renewed because of war.
Moved into an upstairs flat in a large house at 554 Driveway.
Second World War started Sept. 3
 
1940
Moved to a rented house at 14 Newton Street in the Glebe.
Judith Ellen born October 3.
 
1941
My Mother died of a second stroke March 1. Went to Toronto for
the funeral. Three publications. Joined the R.C.A.F. Nov. 1
rank of Pilot Officer, P/0. One week officer training in Toronto,
two weeks Flying Control training at Pennfield Ridge, N.B.
three weeks embarkation leave in Ottawa, sailed for England from
Halifax Dec. 25 aboard M.S.Mosdale, a small swift Norwegian
cargo ship. 

1941
One publication. Taken to Bournemouth, posted to Manston in
Kent, Flying Control Officer under training, posted to Watchfield
in Oxford for F.C. course. Passed. Back to Manston. Checked
out as official F.C. officer. Promoted to Flying Officer,F/0.
Posted back to Canada, on leave with family, posted to Eastern
Air Command Headquarters in Halifax, E.A.C. H.Q. to organize
Flying Control in E.A.C. Remained here for 3-1.2 years. 
 
1942
Worked shifts - 3 8-hour shifts every day, one shift for six
days then two days off and proceed to the next shift. Much free
time. F.C. staff consisted of 4 officers.
 
1943
Started taking organ lessons from Prof. George Scott-Hunter at
St David's Presbyterian Church. After a few months I found I had
not enough time to practice so I switched to composition lessons.
Frequent leaves back to Ottawa. Met another officer, Lance
Morrison. We became lifelong friends. He was 20 years my senior.
F.C. staff grew in size and responsibility. I was promoted to
rank of Flight Lieutenant, F/L.
 
1944
I finally became Senior F.C. Officer at E.A.C. with a staff of
20 officers and 20 'N.D. N.C.O.'s. I was promoted to the rank of
Squadron Leader,S/L, before the end of the war.
 
1945
Demobilized October. Made plans to return to the University of
Toronto to complete Ph.D. studies under generous Veterans
Educational Grant. Returned to Ottawa. My car was sold during
the war. Moved family to Ajax. Rented a wartime housing unit at
12 Glynn Avenue. Commuted daily to Toronto by bus and car pool.
Studied Plant Physiology under Prof. George Duff for two years.
Research not completed, but no ties to Department of Agriculture
this time. owever my job was still open in Ottawa.
 
1946
 Ross Douglas born November 26.
 
1947
Returned to Ottawa to the Tobacco Division July 1 alone. No
accommodation for family. Finally sublet a furnished house Sept.1.
Family arrived, stored furniture in garage for winter. Took my first organ job, St Stephens Presbyterian, a new church meeting
in the YWCA Organized a choir. Later they moved into a
beautiful new stone building on Parkdale Avenue. No organ yet
so I played the piano. Dedication of new building with Moderator
of the Presbyterian Church of Canada present broadcast on radio
program Church of the Air, Minister Rev. George Sparks.
 
1947
One publication. Bruce Archibald born April 27. Attempted to
 
1948
complete my Ph.D. research without success. No support from Chief
of Tobacco Division, Dr Norman MacRae. Bought my first house
April 30 at 281 Wesley Avenue in Westboro for S8500.00. Joined
the Canadian Society of Technical Agriculturists, C.S.T.A. later
renamed Agricultural Institute of Canada, A.I.C.
One publication.
 
1949
My father died January 23. Went to Toronto for the funeral.
Allan Scott born May 21.
 
1950
one publication. Disillusioned with Tobacco Division. Applied
for and offered positions in two American Universities and an
Experiment Station in New Zealand. Declined all three, preferred
Canada. Left St Stephens Church and went to play the organ in
Glebe United. Big choir, four paid soloists, minister Rev.
 
1951
One publication. Left the Tobacco Division, joined the Chemistry
Division, Jim Woodward Chief. Moved back into the old Chemistry
Building, Plant Chemistry Section, Dr Fred Johnston, Head.
Joined the Chemical Institute of Canada, C.I.C. Joined the
Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, P.I.P.S.C.
Chemists Group. Family holidayed at Blue Sea Lake in the Gatineau.
Travelled by train as we still had no car.
 
1952
Completed my thesis and defended it. Received Ph.D. degree Nov. 14.
Joined the Canadian Society of Plant Physiologists as a charter
member, organized by Dr Duff. Glebe Church installed a Schulmeric
Carillon which I played on Sundays.
 
1953
Three publications. Sold the house at 281 Wesley for q9800.00.  bought a house at 147 Aylmer Avenue in Ottawa South for $17000.00
Played the organ for many weddings at Glebe United including
that of the daughter of Hon.James Gardner, Minister of Agriculture,
who was a member there.
 
1954
Still a member of Fourth Avenue Baptist, played the piano for
Wednesday night Prayer Meetings Rev.Earl Cameron, attendance
about 50. Birdie and family attended Fourth Avenue regularly.
 
1954
 Left Glebe United Church and became organist and choir director
at McLeod United on Bank Street. Became secretary of the
Chemists Group of the P.I.P.S.C. also membership chairman in the national executive

1955
Trip to Europe May 27 - August 28. Seven countries, two congresses.
Left McLeod United and went to First Baptist, minister Rev.
Stuart Iveson
 
1956
One publication. Trip to Vancouver and California for meetings.
Met Margaret Harding through her uncle, Jim Aitchison. She had
married and had two children. Found we still cared very much for
one another. B.C.O.Q. Assembly at First Baptist in June. I was
the Convention organist, conducted massed choirs in antiphonal
singing, played the National Anthem for entry of the Governor
General at one session.
 
1957
Became more involved in the P.I.P.S.C. Played the National Anthem
on the piano for the entry of the Governor General at the annual
National Convention banquet in the Chateau Laurier. Was a member
of the Nominating Committee. Offered the position of National
President but declined. Left First Baptist Church and became
organist at McKay United in Rockcliffe, Rev Frank Morgan, minister.
Most satisfying musical experience of my career to-date, became
a good friend of Frank Morgan. Birdie in poor health, spent some
time in a sanatorium.
 

1958
One publication. Agriculture Departmental re-organization -
Science Service, Director Dr Neatby and Experimental Farms Service.
Chemistry Division disappeared. I became a member of the Science
Service Plant Research Institute, Director Dr Harold Senn. Had
two women technicians for the first time,Miss Madeleine Cote and
Miss Alice Savage. Ross Helmer died. I bought a used car, Chev,
from Alberta . Family holidayed up the Ottawa River on the
Quebec side north of Aylmer. Judy left home and went to Toronto
to study singing with Mrs Park at the Toronto Conservatory.
 
1959
Four publications. Dr Koch offered me a job at Harrow. I was also
offered a position of Professor of Chemistry at the University
of Guelph. Birdie and I drove to both places and met various
people. Finally decided to go to Harrow.
 
1960
Four publications. Drove to Harrow and started work July 1 Sold
the house at 147 Aylmer Avenue in Ottawa for $18,770.00. Decided
to live in Kingsville, 8 miles from Harrow, because there was a
Baptist Church there but none in Harrow. Bought a house at
220 Main Street E. for S11,000.00. Required extensive repair and
upgrading. Family arrived in September.
 
1961
Two publications. Set up a Chemistry lab in the Science Service
Laboratory Building on the Harrow Research Station. My technician
was Alex Kurosky. Two new modern greenhouses were erected for my
research on greenhouse vegetables. The whole family except Judy
joined the Kiagsville Baptist Church. The boys had been baptized
by Rev.Earl Cameron at Fourth Avenue in Ottawa. Was asked to play
the organ at Kingsville but declined for various reasons. Became
a deacon at the church. Mrs Helmer moved to Kingsville and lived
in an apartment. Trip to Vancouver, Victoria and Regina with
Dr Koch for A.I.C.Convention. Charter Member of the Ontario
Institute of Professional Agrologists.
 
1962
Two publications. Birdie's health began to deteriorate -
unfavourable climate and air pollution. She spent some time in
hospital in Leamington. Dr George Bruner was very attentive.
I asked Jim Woodward now Director of Science Service, for a
transfer to Summerland, B.C. where the climate was more suitable
for Birdie: He agreed and started action. Bought a new car,
 
1959 Pontiac.
 
1963
Five publications. Birdie entered Victoria Hospital in London
in January - Dr Brien. I travelled to London twice a week for
three months, some times taking one of the boys with me.
She was the most cheerful uncomplaining patient ever and she won
the affection and devotion of all the staff. On one occasion the
doctor allowed me to take her for a car ride in the warm spring
sunshine with a portable oxygen tank. She suffered. from emphysema.
 
1963
Birdie died March 21. The funeral was in Ottawa conducted by
Dr Frank Morgan. Mrs Helmer moved back to Ottawa.
I was invited to be the organist at First Baptist Church inLeamington, Rev.Len 0'Neil, minister. Accepted but still remained
a deacon at Kingsville at their urgent request. Over the next few
years I attended Wednesday Prayer Meeting, led the Cottage Prayer
Meetings, was chairman of the Constitution Committee, member of
a Pulpit Committee but never able to attend Sunday worship.
Jim Woodward cancelled my move to Summerland.
 
1964
Six publications. Alex Kurosky left Harrow and went to Vancouver.
My new technician was Dawnna Little, the first woman technician
at Harrow. Motor trip to Vancouver with Judy. Met Margaret
Harding, visited her six times over the next few fears. Spent
Christmas with the boys with Win and Harold Stibbards in Brantford.
Became a member of the B.C.O.Q. Planning Committee. Trips to Toronto.
Judy moved from Toronto to New York to continue her music studies.
 
1965
one publication. Bruce left home and went to Ottawa to live with
his grandmother, Mrs Helmer. Visited Judy in New York.
 
1966
Motor trip to the Maritime Provinces with Judy. Judy married
Ted White in September. Went to New York for the wedding with
Mrs Helmer and Doug. Bruce and Allan. Two publications.

1967 Five publications. Went to Expo '67 in Montreal alone. Andrea
was born March 20. Doug. and Allan are now living in Windsor,
Doug. at the University of Windsor and Allan at St Clair College.
 
1968
Two publications. B.C.O.Q. Convention in Leamington in June .
Once again I was Convention organist. Visited Judy in New York.
Motor trip to Western Canada with Harold and Win Stibbards.
June Stewart whom I had met at Park Church was also along as far
as Regina. I was attracted to her and was tiring of five years
of widdowerhood. Continued trip on to Edmonton where I met
Ed Stibbards and Ed Checkland again, then on to Vancouver.
Christopher was born Dec. 11.
 
1969
Five publications. Married June Stewart October 25. Honeymoon
in Hawiai. Sold house at 220 Main Street E. for $18,000.00.
Bought house on Sunset Avenue, Sunnybrook Subdivision, for
332,000.00. A new office building was built on the Research
Station at Harrow. I designed my own laboratory. Official
opening Nov. 7. Many Department officials present.

1970
Three publications. Trip to Europe for Greenhouse Conference in
Holland. June accompanied me. Visited relatives in Scotland
and friends in England, toured London and had brief visit in
Ireland. June transferred her membership from Park Baptist Church
Brantford to the Leamington Baptist Church and I transferred mine
from Kingsville to Leamington. June joined the choir.
 
1971
Three publications. Resigned position as organist at Leamington.
Elected deacon. Allan was killed in a car accident . Large
funeral in Leamington. Willie and Nellie Webster from Scotland
visited. Went with them on a boat trip with John and Bobbie on
John's boat.

1972
Motor trip to San Diego, California. Harold Stibbards died while
we were there. Returned through Saskatchewan and visited relatives.
Spent Christmas on the farm with Lawrence Stewart and family.
Transferred church membership from Leamington Baptist to Temple
Baptist in Windsor. Commuted regularly. Elected deacon.
 
1974
One publication. Spent one week in winter in Barbados. Met the
Minister of Agriculture there, toured the Island with him. Offered
a position there with C.I.D.A. Declined with thanks. Spent one
week in summer at a church camp at Keswick on Lake Simcoe.
Decided to take up golf, played on a course north of Kingsville.
Doug. married Cindy Putman.
 
1975
One publication. Spent one week in the Bahamas golfing, in winter.
 
1976
Four publications. Winter holiday at Puerta Vallarta with John
and Bobbie. In January I was awarded a distinguished Service
Award by the Essex County Associated Growers. In May I was
 
1976
elected a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and
presented with the diploma at the Annual Convention in London.
At the presentation ceremony I was accompanied by June and Dan
and Audrey Young. Retired from the Department of Agriculture
October 31 after 43 years. Retirement party at Harrow, presented
with a framed 24" V 16" pencil sketch of the new Research Building
done by a local artist. Sold the house on Sunset Avenue for
$60,000.00. Moved to Kitchener to an apartment at #1710
11 Margaret Avenue.
 
1977
Transferred church membership from Temple Baptist, Windsor to
Highland Baptist, Kitchener, Rev. Art McDowall. Elected deacon.
Motor trip to Nova Scotia. Joined the Dundee Golf Club.

1978
One publication - my last, making a total of 69 scientific publications. Kevin born March 25.
 
1979
Spent one month in winter at Maple Leaf Estates, Port Charlotte,
Florida on the Gulf side in John's mobile home Unit 480. Spent
one week in summer at Clevelands House in Muskoka. Highland
deacons had a weekend retreat.

1980
One month at Maple Leaf Estates, rented Unit 212. One week at
Clevelands House. Rev. Art McDowall left Highland Baptist.
 
1981
One month at Maple Leaf Estates, rented Unit 257. One week in
late July at The Briars, Jackson's Point, Lake Simcoe for golf.
Rev. Bill Wood came to Highland Baptist. Ross was born November 5.
 
1982
One week of golf at The Briars. Wrote my first book of poetry -
"Rhymes with a Biblical Context". Supplied at the Highland organ.
John retired and went with Bobbie to live in Victoria, B.C.
 
1983
One month at Deerfield Beach, Florida East Coast. June's father,
Frank Stewart died after we returned. Funeral in Brantford.
One week at The Briars. Wrote my second. poetry book - "Paul". Visited John and Bobbie in Victoria.

1984
One month at Plantation, south of Venice, Florida. Win died in
Toronto while we were away. Funeral in Brantford. One week at
The Briars for golf. John suffered a severe stroke, I visited
him in Victoria. Also saw Bruce in Vancouver and Margaret Harding.
Wrote my next book of poetry "The Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ -
His Life". Compiled "A Genealogy of the Scott Family".
 
1985
One month at Riverbend, North Fort Myers. June's Mother died. We
returned to Brantford too late. Funeral in Brantford. We
returned to Riverbend after one week. One week at The Briars.
Wrote "The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ - His Words".
 
1986
One month at Plantation and one month at Deltura, North Fort Myers.
One week at The Briars in midsummer for golf. Wrote my experiences
in the Second World War - "Forty Years After", Transferred our
church membership from Highland Baptist, Kitchener to Park Baptist Brantford. Elected a deacon.
 
1987
Three months at Maple Leaf Estates, Unit 865 One week at The Briars
Wrote "Odyssy in Europe" -my business trip in 1955. Celebrated
my 75th birthday with a three-day visit to Ottawa. A11 the family
were present - children, spouses and grandchildren - two parties and much visiting with friends.
 
1988
Five months at Maple Leaf Estates, Unit 117. One week at The Briars.
Miscellaneous writings - Theological Essay, Limericks, Letters to the Editor.
 
1989
Five months at Maple Leaf Estates, Unit 117. One week at The Briars.
 
1990
Five months at Maple Leaf Estates, Unit 117. Purchased Unit 629.
Wrote biography of my father - "Memories---A Tribute".
John and Bobbie spent a month in Florida near us.
 
1991
Five months at Maple Leaf Estates, Unit 629. John and Bobbie
spent a month in Florida near us. James and Rita Thomson visited
us from Scotland. Wrote "History of Park Baptist Church, 1970-1992:'
 
1992
Five months at Maple Birthday with a large
also came for the occasion and stayed for a couple of days. James Thomson died in Doors on Thanksgiving
